View Full Version : Why do you quit?

I get it that the destination - winning - is important. But the journey is the worthier part.

Every single time I join a game room, whether it be stroke or new real (and a couple of times even a match) it seems like half the people or more quit before the end.

Heh-heh - maybe I need a shower...

I've pretty sure I've never played an 8-player new real format game room where more than four people remained until the end. And aside from arranged games where all the players are friends, I know I've never completed a four player stroke game with all the starting players.

It's not limited to lower level players. Last night I played in an 18-hole game room where the owner was a Level 20 gamer and he quit after four holes, apparently because of a bogey. Not naming names because I'm not angry and not trying to call anybody out, I'm just frustrated and especially, friggin baffled.

Playing the game is fun, right?

So why do you quit?

Someone may have joined to get a few practice holes in before a tournament and didn't have enough time to finish the full round.

EDIT - I imagine some people join to try and beat their Personal Best and once it is out of reach leave at that point.

Yeah when I used to do tournaments, I used to practice because I hated sitting around the lobby. I am sure others do that as well so when the tournaments is about to begin, I quit.

a lot of people just play to post a personal best, and do it while being able to talk to(read gloat) to other players. I know thats why i play GR's ;D

I very, very rarely quit game rooms, no matter what happens. If I do it's usually because I was just getting a warm-up round before a tournament. On the very, very odd occasion I've quit due to a horribly bad round too, but I usually stick those out too. :)

i very very very very rarely quit.
Game rooms i'll quit if there is a tourn, or i'm playing with a maxed out character on a course that i have decent score on already (-20 or more for 18h, 10- or better for 9 holes)
as for tourns, i usually see them through to the end, UNLESS i play really really terrible and can see no point of going on. sometimes you do the first 7 holes and feel like it is just going nowhere.. frankly i've still played less than 100 g0 tourns, so i'm still gathering tourns to allow me to get level ups + i need all the experience i can get ^_^

Gamerooms are time killers for many players, unless I've got a friend in the game (wouldn't have joined otherwise really, rare exceptions) or I'm on pace to set a new record I won't think twice about jumping out for something else.

If you're looking for more of a strict format where more people stick it out until the end competing you should start playing ranked Tournaments. Sure you'll still have 20% or more of the field quit out by the end but there will still be plenty of players left.

Besides in all honesty, I would not put too much stock into what you see some people do in game rooms, not exactly a place you'll see higher levels playing hard. I spent 9 holes trying nothing but backdoor putts in a gameroom once and some delusional Level 14 actually thought he was giving me a run for my money when he shot -5 at Highlands.

Yep, this is pretty much how Kbongg plays every game room these days. Fun to watch though (saw him sink one from ~10m for eag yesterday), and ya gotta admire his LJ beginner / beginner setup.

How many bdoor's did i get that round? they were actually working pretty good for me. And in all fairness, i pretty much have done that from the start. Very rarely use gamerooms for anything other than fun.

Btw, played Sophie-ann yesterday. She had two chips that Bdoor'ed in. Very cool. Never seen anything other than putts bdoor (although i have had a couple eagles spin around the cup with just not quite enough force to activate the Bdoor). Should be noted that she absolutely crushed me in our matches.

haa i set out many a time in a game to "riser eveything" i think i got 2 long approaches in.

but i will gladly, happily grab my coat and leave game room without closing the door behind me or saying bye bye, its just a PI excerise before tour for me

heck i will even ask a mate to jump into my room then FK off just so i can activate the start timer

lmao bdoor hole outs are awesome. Usually an sts shot that completely missed it's target and lucked out.

Still credit kb for showing me how to bdoor putts though. Actually saved me a pod once.

Really? My first backdoor was an 245y (or so) albatross. ;D

Sophie-Ann is a great player, btw. Very fun to play with. :)

I never quit. But that's just me. If I join, I join for the whole thing. If it's 15 minutes before a tourn, I won't start in a room. I'm happy to be sociable through to the end. I don't quit tourns either, cos I damn well won't be beaten by the game, even if it's obvious that if ther'd been a ref, he'd have stopped it long ago. Do find it odd that people chuck it in after playing one bad hole, even on the front 9. If I did that I'd never finish any round ever. Timing out is a different matter entirely....rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb

I was gonna comment that sometimes when I can't beat my top score anymore in a game room, I'd try and go for long putts. Try and get on green as far from pin as you can then sink a putt.
Then I thought, what a cool idea for a tournament?? Think it would work?? You play an 18H match, and the winner is the one who sunk the longest putt in that round.

clint_westwood
03-02-2009, 02:58 PM
yes the top players would appreciate and respect that, people who still struggle with the game in general will think we are nuts................for trying to get as far from the hole as possible

hows this for a game go play highlands and others and keep your 14 power shots for turtle/rabbit. set up with expert and big mag and just have a round where you set new long drive records..........just a bit different i guess and fun

I usually back out to offline and get a practice round in for a booked tour or possible tour, the warmup seems to be helping my game, i never quit tours, even when getting my azz handed to me, which is often in G1 now lol.

"you should start playing ranked Tournaments."

LOL ... unless you're talking about something different than what I think you're talking about, I'm pretty sure I've played in a few ranked tournaments. Dunno why that struck me as so funny, mebbe I'm just weird, but I really was LOL'ing for a moment.

On the topic, I think I see what the deal is. Sure, I don't take a game room as seriously as a ranked tour. By far ... I've even done the "waste shots trying to sink a backdoor putt" thing. (Never figured it out, anybody wanna share the secret?) I just had no idea that many people see anything that's not a ranked tour as a waste of time; contemptuously, even.

I like playing in game rooms; it's fun, and given how these days there is often no ranked tour for a given hour, it's either a game room or a GF, if there is one.

No worries, though. Somebody wanna quit, I got no criticisms. I'll probably have a snide comment when you bail out though, maybe something clever like "quitter." ;)

MasonR
03-02-2009, 03:44 PM
I guess I missed the joke?

Either way, I don't think anyone said it's a waste of time, it's a timer-killer. Those are different things. A Level 20 would most likely rather play against another dozen Level 20s and a bunch of other G0s than finishing up a Slow Timer gameroom with at most 7 other people

I mean make the snide comments all you want, I'd just be careful not to piss someone off simply because they bailed out of a Highlands Big Cup 9out game. They aren't insulting you, they aren't ditching you, they aren't doing anything wrong, they're just screwing around.

It is just a room created for fun, so really you can't blame anyone for bailing on a game room if there is something better to do.

For the record, if I enter a stroke room with friends, I never bail :)

clint_westwood
03-02-2009, 04:05 PM
well if its crowns then unless i alby the first and eagle the second ,third and STS the 4th , then i have no chance of beating my -14 on 9 out so i generally quit.............

keys, phone, wallet ..........i'll get my coat

I know Reeja, and that's a good quality m8.

I always go play gamerooms over on minna with sophie-ann mostly, and Reeja whenever he's not tourning :)

I never bail out, and what i've noticed, in minna most really don't. Very contrary i've been to several gamerooms with guys i don't know and maybe one time, only 1 has bailed out.. And even that might've been due to net error (can't really tell).. Strange.

I play the game only for gamerooms.. Well not only, but mainly just because i enjoy being sociable.

Meh..

seeing how game rooms dont really count for much its totally understandable to play two or three holes to warm up for a tourney

It's hard enough to get a game room to get 6+ unless it's f'n Highland...so I join other rooms and just play and keep quiet, the mock the higher than level 17 thing gets old quick.
