Just an idea...if the powers that be don't like it....um...sorry?

I request specific help on the TEE shot placement of GREX Hole 3

I'm never sure where to aim with Experts and Intermediates...try to curve around tree and go long? Lay up in front of the log? I've hit the log on the app way too many times now. So any expert player opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

That's fine Scotty, it's better that you ask in a new thread than in the actual hole guide. :)

For that hole I lay up in front of the log, but try to do it in such a way that I can always get around it on the approach shot, either by having a long enough distance between me and the log to clear it in height, or enough clearance to side spin around it. I don't think I've ever hit it, actually, except when using it to get to the other side...

So I generally club down to a club that fits between the log and the rough in front of the fairway, and go with that, and usually place the ball about in the middle of the log...

I'm sure some other players might give better advice though. :)

yeah, my point in starting a new thread would be for the answers to be in the HOLE thread :)

If its the hole I remember I go for the log everytime and try to roll down it to get real close. I've only played it about 6 times and was only successful doing that the first time but it was sooo satisfying doing it that first time I can't help myself but to keep trying again and again. ;)

Yeah, I used to do that the first times I played too, because it looked cool. But the chance of ending up sorry that way is larger than the chance of hitting the log on the approach by laying up in front of it, so it just seems like an unnecessary risk if you ask me. The approach from the front of the log is longer, but not longer than that any character, even short ranged novices, can do it without problem. About a 175-185y approach if I don't remember it wrong, which fits nicely with most characters club setups too. From the other side you might risk getting an in-between clubs approach...

Of course it is an unnecessary risk.  That is why I always try it and incidentally why I am one of the best players out there. 8)
Also notice my incredibly high success rate as well as noted in my original post.

Used to try the log all the time, but haven't done it in two months at the very least. Not only is there the hole in the log near the bottom, but you can also race through the fairway to OB although unlikely, it can happen.

I lay up just short of the log, but not in front of it, to the side (right reg tee, left long tee).

I've gone OB once or twice going way past. Wasn't impressed at all.

Is there a hole in the log? Never noticed that.
I've had a couple of times a ball nestled between end of log and land and therefore unplayable, so I mostly lay up in front. Only with a favorable wind I go for the long shot just before the bunker.

There is a hole there and OB is a possibilty as well depending on how the ball exits the log. I also believe it is an unnecessary risk. I think that the designers put it there to temp the greedy players, lol.

if the pin is at the very front, i go for log as not that easy getting close, but if the pin is middle or back there is no way i go for log easy bird with pin at back, even if u miss pi still rolls to pin.

Could do with some helpful tips or strategy for hole 7 on Crown.

I think I struggle with this hole more than any other in the game. Firstly I find the fairway a nightmare even good drives quite often roll down the slope and into the rough and then the green is about as big as a postage stamp with evil bunkers either side.

Aside from the obvious hit sbs and hit pi does anybody have any particular techniques I can employ to help me play this hole better?

Sounds like the pillar shot on the Silver Peaks course. I love to try for it, but with such a low success rate it's not worth doing in a tourney.

I also lay up in front of the log. Excellent place to be for second shot.

I go for the log every time and I make it in the fairway like 90% of the time. i dint think it is that big of a deal. and you guys are a lot better than me.:D

I go for the log. I've seen balls fall down that hole at the end, but it's yet to happen to one of mine (knock on wood). I think I once ran the ball too far and it went thru the fairway on the other side and fell OB. All in all, I'd say I have more success hitting that log than I do going for the 400-yd drive on Grex #5. So, like I said, I go for the log.

As for Crown #7, I just try to drive the ball a wee little bit past the bunker at the top of the fairway. As long as you don't go too far past the bunker and into the rough on the top, you're okay. If you end up too close to the center of the fairway and it rolls down, it's a tough approach shot but not impossible. As for the approach to the green, you gotta pray for PI. If you're not feeling lucky that day, just aim for the side of the green closer to the water. You don't want to go past the hole and be in that bunker in the back. I think we all know what that's like.

I think that could be helpful to have a 'green help' section where people could release tips & hints to improve the quality of approaches and prevent bad bounces on difficult holes with nasty/tricky greens and where slopes plays an important role (eg. crown no. 4).

Log on #3 at Grex is just asking for an OB, and there's no real advantage to doing it in the first place. The mountain path on #5 is the difference between hitting a PW and a Driver on your 2nd, so there's a definite advantage, especially if you have a back pin. Same can't be said on #3 though, if you get it down through the log with no hassles you're hitting a wedge for your 2nd, but if you hit the correct tee shot into the upslope you're hitting a short or mid iron from an upslope, still quite an easy shot and even one that will be safe if you miss PI. I just don't see what the point is taking such a big roll of the dice so very early in the round for absolutely no worthwhile gain.

Everyone's decision is their own, but I've got no sympathy for someone who uses the log and then hits one OB or gets an uplayable. I see it all the time in tours, and then I peek at Em's drive, or plum's or scoot's and they're all right on the same number I was, right on the upslope.

Rex gets enough heat for being "luck" based and this is another example of when it's entirely under your own control. Kudos to anyone with a high log success rate, but I bet it isn't greatly influencing your birdie average on the hole.

agree w/ alla that ^^

still not a real fan of that app on 3 but...g-rex is the perfect course to remind you that pulling out the driver on every tee is not always the right answer. in fact, it's rarely the answer at that turd of a course. other than #5 (provided conditions are ripe), i don't pull out the 1w at all on the front nine.
