yeah very very common it happens with me, sometimes i have to kick start it by chatting using the XMB as you say, then loading up the game and it can be fine but still a hit n miss
i find it works if someone else creates the game room and not me :(
its the only game that does this for me, resi evil can sometimes cause me problems in co-op mode but works fine in versus
strange aint it

It is possible one of you has a headset that needs to be paired up everytime you turn you turn the ps3 on, its how it is with some headsets.

thats a strange one, maybe a port conflict? Do both of you have your ps3's in a DMZ?

DMZ = De Militrized Zone, Basically means it unblocks any communications ports on the PS3 meaning it's less likely to have issues with voice/video comms, you'll probably need to have a look at your routers manual/documentation for instructions on how to do this as it varies from brand to brand...
Hope that helps :)

i've played people from America and Canada with headset before, had no problems.
I usually set game room though..
1. Enter room.
2. Pick your character.
3. Once at the ready screen, press Start. The option at the bottom will activate headset mode, but says something weird. Both of you need to have it on for it to work properly.
4. Talk.
this works for me. Played people from around the world with headset

The bottom option that you should select to turn chat ON is "Enter the selected lobby." It's a stupid error. It used to have proper words but ClapHanz at its finest again.. To turn chat off, you do the same thing, but you'll notice that the words will say: "Cannot enter at this time: lobby is full." or something to that effect. Its ridiculous really. LOL

You BOTH have to have chat turned on so you BOTH have that little white speaker icon by your name.
I had a problem with my headset not working in golf before. Here is what we did to resolve it. Perhaps it will work for you also?
1. RESET ps3. Hard Reset -- turn power ALL THE WAY OFF.
2. Go to Accessory Settings and turn INPUT to DO NOT USE, and output to SYSTEM DEFAULT.
3. UNPLUG your headset from ps3. *if its wired*
4. RECONNECT (or if bluetooth--rescan) Headset to the ps3
5. Go back to Accessory settings and make sure INPUT and OUTPUT settings are BOTH set to your headset name.
Then go back to golf and try it again. Both my friend and i had WIRED-headsets, so it was easy. Takes a bit longer to deal with the BlueTooths.

guess what. after more testing and the help of some nice people
in the lobby. our headsets work fine with other people
get this they work with some but not all people.
still cant talk to my friend.
I looked in my manual for DMZ not mentioned.
someone mentioned it could be a software problem
guess Ihave to keep working on this one till I get an answer LOL
somewhere out there someone knows how to fix this
I hope?
