hey guys,
Ive connected to hsg on ps3 before, but havent played for a few months. ive tried connecting recently, and have been running into problems at the "checking version" screen. It basically tells me that there is a network error and I cannot connect.

In the past, I believe that this was problem because my router originally did not support "ip fragments"..(it would tell me that when configuring my network configs on the ps3..typically is never a problem though). however, when i changed to a different router, that problem seemed to go away and i was able to log back in. However, ive tried connecting again today and despite using a router that allows ip fragments, i still CANNOT get connected. I am connected to the ps3 network (im logged in and can play other games online it seems, can see my friends online etc), but when i go in to hsg and click online...it goes to checking version and ends there. typically it will download the latest update and get me into the lobby..but not anymore...
Any suggestions will help. please help if you can..THANKS!!!

ok..so ive tried using a different router now. still wont connect me. i dont have the ip fragment problems anymore. but i do have an error saying "my router connection is a NAT type 3, that disables communication in certain games". still wont allow me to connect though..

I have a couple of suggestions that you could try since you said other games seem to be working online:

1) Configure your router so that you get NAT Type 2 (instead of 3). The best way to do this is to either put your PS3 in your router's "DMZ" or forward certain ports on your modem. I did the latter and it helped with my connection. Whether or not you get HSG online running, this is good to do to improve your connection (will likely help with other games online). Here's how to do it:

a) Go to this website and click on your router model: http://portforward.com/
b) Skip the advertisement and on the list of games, click on "PlayStation Network"
c) Follow the instructions to forward the listed ports past your firewall for unimpeded communication during gameplay. You should also forward 10070-10080 (as a range) on TCP and 10070 on UDP (see Sony's official info: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=241&p_sid=pRvJUUDj). All of these ports are ones that Sony games may use (as well as many third-party games on PS3), but other games may have additional ports that may be needed as well.
d) Be sure UPnP is enabled (if your router supports it) in your router software.
e) Test you connection on the PS3 and see if the NAT type is now 2 (the best one for wireless connections).

2) Delete the Hot Shots Golf game data (not save data!) and reinstall the game. This is a last resort since you'll have to re-download all of the updates and it will likely take hours.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Thanks for responding...however..
i spent hours on the phone last night w/ my internet provider..and he actually walked me thru the port forwarding process. so i actually already tried doing that w/ a static isp and we found the specific ports for HSG...
also..i tried several different routers...some of which were NAT type 2. that did not work either...the only way to get NAT type 1 would be to bypass my router and just connect the ps3 into the modem..but that would be impossible for me to do (house is set up thru fiberoptics..modem is in masterbedroom closet)
this is really strange.....especially since it appears that this is the only game it has a problem with...please help!!!

ok..new update..
so i did try to go ahead and bypass the router. i connected ps3 directly to the modem. (it was a nat2 this time). still did not work. so we've established that its not router or the fact that it was a nat 3 at first. all we have left is whether theres something wrong w/ my internet connection (possible, but everything else seems to work ie laptops, other ps3 games). or there is something wrong w/ the ps3 (which i would find out probably by bringing it to a friends who plays oob on there ps3 on their internet). in the meantime...ne suggestions you all can offer would be appreciated thanks again.

o and another point...i thought by connecting directly to the modem it would bring me to a nat1...but it was still nat2...not sure if that has any role in it or not...

Hmmm, yeah I thought a direct connection would give you NAT1 automatically, but I guess not. That's why I'm not a network admin. :p Maybe there are other things going on with the routers or setup you're using that's affecting your connection. Hopefully you get the chance to test out your PS3 at another person's house. Or maybe have another person bring theirs to your place. Good luck!

ok..so i brought the ps3 to a friends house and it worked perfectly fine. got me connected right away..so i guess we can finally say that its my internet connection thats the problem...o well...not sure wat options i have beyond that...(the internet is built into the home and we pay for it thru the homeowners association fee..so im kinda stuck w/ it)...

Man, that's rough. I don't know what to say. Very odd that only HSG is giving you problems on your connection. I wonder if some other folks have had similar problems. Maybe the servers are a bit different compared to other games. Do you have other first-party (SCEA/SCEE) games that work online?

not sure about other scea games...i can tell you that Call of duty (modern and world at war), fight night, gta, resist, and rainbow 6 all seem to work fine...i dont play that many games really so its hard to say...i already had someone from my internet provider come out to look (and he replaced our modem as well)..and it still doesnt work...(we know its not the router (any of the 5 that i tried), or the ps3, or the game, or port forwarding, or static ip) so looks like thats the end of the line for me playing this game online in this house. o well...we tried...as for anyone else, it doesnt appear that this is very common problem at all...seems like im the only one...this will likely go down as an "unsolved mystery" hahah...

but thanks for the input...if anything changes ill keep u guys posted and if you guys have any new revelations please let me know..

Problems have arisen in the Far East due to an undersea cable being cut:

News story here (http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/communications/0,39044192,62056838,00.htm)

Wiki page on the APCN2 cable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APCN_2_(cable_system))

This has caused me to get slow internet connections for U.S and European sites and regular network errors on HSG. I haven't fired up Minna since the issue was first reported (Aug 12) but I am sure that would also have problems. Hopefully, this will be resolved by the weekend - very frustrating
