View Full Version : Why do all the engaging topics get deleted...

I mean I understand you want complete order and control over what is said and done on the site, but still it is gey that everything is so closely monitored. I feel that this dictatorial stance the "Management" has taken over this site is part of the reason the site has lost traffic.

Yes and abit uncalled for in my opinion, but I really don't think that topics need to be modded or deleted or closed because of an argument. I mean let people say what it is that they need to say and be done with it.

Reej, I think you have a good point. If more people wanted us to let personal bickering continue, then maybe management would consider it. Currently this forum isn't like the majority of game forums where anything goes. The main site admin/creator will always have the final say on the posting philosophy of the site, but he's certainly willing to listen to feedback.
By the way, we're trying to be a little looser in letting discussions go, but when it's blatant personal attacks that's when we may have to remove posts or close threads. We don't actually delete them, and in fact have restored posts after closely reviewing them (one time I remember at least). If things settle down, there's nothing to say that we can't reopen a thread as well.
Personally, I don't mind a bit of back and forth (break out the MJ eating popcorn gif). Even if it gets heated, as long as people come to an understanding, it's probably okay. But unfortunately that latter part hasn't happened too often, and that's where we've sometimes been a bit quick (or not so quick at times) to mod things.

I say there is one cure for the common cold.
Create a thread called ****** ***** *** **** *****, where all you boys can hammer it out until you finally feel some love for one another. Argue about who has the bigger feet or whatever you wish, until your faces all turn blue and you start crying to your wives/finances/husbands? about how hurt you are.
Sound good?

You hit the nail on the head there!
Yes first post, but i was on this site before and it used to be good. However, when it was decided that ever other member become a moderator or some sort or other, that's when things started goin pear shaped.
"Too many cooks spoil the broth"
A statement was never more true.
Power going to people's heads is very obvious on this site.
Threads are being locked for no good reason, posts are being deleted for no good reason and general over-ruling by moderators is out of control.
Now, may I make a suggestion.
For one week, let every post stand (unless it is racist, sexually abusive or a personal threat to someone's personal wellbeing - there should be no other reason for deleting or removing a post/thread)
Monitor the daily traffic, and I can pretty much predictthat site traffic will go up.
Just because someone has been givn a "moderator" title does not givethem free reign to destroy a perfectly good site (whichthis was up till a few months ago)
So, delete this you want, no big deal to me. But for people who like to visit this site daily to engage in a bit of friendly (sometimes heated) banter, get down off your bloody pedestals and give everyone back their right to free speech If a post is offensive or someone finds it a personal attack I'm sure they will ask for it to be deleted. If not, then just leave it the hell alone.

I wish you could all see the tool we have called the Mod Log - it shows everything that is edited, moved and altered. You would actually see that it's not as much as you think.
As for the power going to the head. Pfft. Not at all - i'm empowered in the real world and really don't get a in a state of grandure just cos i'm Admin on a computer game. Again if you could see how much stuff actually does get allowed then you would see how forgiving we all are.
I would urge people to look at the way the staff is structured. The buck stops with Morph, then there is Yuna and I, then the department heads of Shaq, Cartman, OG and OP. The other members of staff are there to assist in looking through all the boards the site provides and that involves cleaning posts up of bad language and moving posts if they are in the wrong section.
Remember no one gets paid for the work they do, the events they provide and the time that they give.
Yes a Mod and Admin should be held at higher regard when theya re posting but we all slip as i did today. Will i be punished? Quite possibly and that is for Morph to decide.
reeja19
09-17-2009, 04:26 PM
But why in the hell should you be punished for stating your opinion. I mean I don't agree with what was said, and it may have offended said person, but it is still you just stating an opinion. There may not be alot of things deleted, but within 5 minutes of me posting to a rude comment RD made about me it was removed. But his comment was left up overnight and only removed when I commented on what he said, which is complete BS in my opinion.

You do have a valid point - but where is the line drawn? At what point do you turn round and say enough is enough?
Most of the altercations on the site are centered around a select group of people. Is the answer to simply let them say what they choose and hope that it doesn't offend anyone else in the cross fire. When left like this there are too many variables to consider. If this was an 18 certifacte game then i would say - open forum and lets go at it but its not.
I would also urge you to reflect on the comment about the "paid" issue. This site is provided to its members free of charge and is paid for and maintained by its STAFF! Morph has bared the greatest weight of this but i along with a few others have put hands in pockets and fronted up some money.

My 2 cents : My opinion on Moderators
Yuna: over protective of young members which is understandable and I always champion her for stand up against cheaters but like I've said before: the lite sexual content on this blog is the less of a problem for kids who's using internet and of course; majority of people here are adult [ seem like it no? ] individual responsibility should apply to all memebrs.
J-Mod: For the most part he's very straight with all member except that sometime he let his buddy getaway with lite sexual joke while mine got ban because it doen't meet Yuna's standard [ Target on my back? ]
Inter: Now; We've seen Inter came out and forbid people from asking question before. Best example is when RD step down. That was a dictator behavior but in retrospect he may did that in order to keep thing calm between certain member.
Mace: Of course he is the best player. it's difficult to argue anything relating gameplay with him, after all he had PB and stat to back up his theories. But he's quick to take a shot at RD whenever he have a chance which some of us had witness it this morning.
OP: he is very straight with all member. I personally think he should be the one who lay out the standard to all Moderators.
whatever happen to all the fun we used to have? I rarely tour HSG anymore simply because of all ego and 2 faces a lot of players impost on line.
this site was great at one point now it's became an adult playground for " authority " and " Ego "
My game progress because of this site and people here. I'm grateful to you all.

Money has got nothing to do with it. You keep bringing that up. Did Youtube/Facebook/Bebo/Twitter or any other social site keep referring to that when they were starting up? No. How or why this site came about is not the concern of the people who use it. The fact that people want to use this site should be enough to keep its creators happy, if not then why bother. If money isn't an issue to Morph, then why should it be an issue to you.
Edit out swear words, fine ( I understand there are younger users on this site), but don't block people's opinions just because you can.
I said once before (months ago) that this site has the oportunity to grow and develope as the games do, but if you beat down the people who count, then you are left with nothing.
Roughdawg4

Thats not what he meant by money. He probably means that if you don't enjoy it and you aren't getting paid, why do it? Not meaning that he wants to get paid (hopefully that made sense)
And you brought up those examples, they all refer to Morpheus's position the creator, not people helping out.

The biggest problem with this site right now is the moderators and Frozen Walkers sort of eluded to the problem.
All the moderators have different views on what should be moderated. I really think you guys need to get together and figure it out. This is one of the reasons why I quit originally because people did what they wanted and there were really no guidelines. Then maybe you can post what is expected and what is fair game so there is no confusion.

I agree that people shouldn't be beaten down for posting their opinions and debating arguments but when it goes off on a tangent (my wrongdoing earlier) that is where there should be an element of control.
Yes it maybe good viewing but is it in turn not hurting the site by advertising that all we ever do here is argue and call each other names? We have already had discussions in other topics that people feel traffic is down due to all the NFL and NHL topics being created. Where does the finger pointing stop?? or can it simply be contributed to the fact that not as many people are choosing to play the game as much as they once did??
It has been talked about having an 18+ area and maybe it is time to reconsider this idea. A place where certain issues could be hammered out without the need for mod intervention.

I just don't get it.
Going off on a tangent is one of the great things that sites like this do.
Why shouldn't a post that started off "I got a PB on Highlands" end up discussing everything from Sophies sexiness to what car I just bought.
That's what people enjoy reading.
Digressing is something we all do and it's not a reason to start moderating threads.

Dare I say the reason no one is saying good job is because for over a month the highest number of visitors to the site was 42, until either Google Bots or Yahoo Spiders upped the numbers to 108.
There was a time when there was 100 odd members on at any one time.

I like the game, I like the site, but I don't like the way the site has changed over the past few months.
Too many people are trying to control everything about the site.
I'm quite happy to sign off again, but, to be honest, I feel it's a shame that a perfectly good site with many people interested in the content is going down the pan at such a rate that the people who make the site happen, can't even see its demise right in front of their own eyes

This isn't a witch hunt but why hide behind a name? You could have just said "hi it's Gally i'm back......" but you didn't.
I really don't see a vaild argument in this. In all honesty the staff have been far more relaxed due to myself, Morph and OP having personal commitments meaning we can not log in as much. Shaq and Cartman concentrating on events as opposed to modding and poor Yuna having to front up the bulk of the work.
If anything the mod activity has decreased.
Reeja's original post was intriguing and interesting but i kind of feel that you have used to to stir up a little storm and we are all biting.

while I can see Inter and others Mod take a bit control over this site we can't overlooked what these people have done for our community and people who play this game. now to be extremely honest here. the saddest thing I experienced on this site is not the heavily moded or over protective of Yuna I can respect other people concerned and find common respect toward other members. But the saddest thing is when RD step down. He is the Best Mod who always help out everyone. I'm not kissing azz but let stop for a second and look back at what these people have done for this game and this site shall we?

Oh my word, i have not shot down this thread, are you feeling okay - i'm debating it aren't i?
I haven't even modded the F word RD placed in a post earlier in the topic.
You've used this topic to pretty much attack every single person that is and has been asked to do something for this site.
Fair enough you feel that there is an over modding issue, both Yuna and I in this topic have stated that we infact do less "modding" now than we ever have done.
I don't know how you can't sit there and justfy when all you want to do is attack me (mainly) and the other guys and girls that actually put a lot of effort into trying to run this site.
You think i want to ruin the site? If i want i could shut the place down with one click of my mouse? Do i? No!

OK, I'm done.
I do not want to come across as "going for the throat" or attacking people.
The site would run itself if you just let it.
And as for you "could shut the place down", we both know that's not true.
I'm not getting at you personally, but even you can admit that this site is not what it was. A bit of constructive criticism ( which is all it is) does not go amiss now and again. And, yes, I think I have given a good observation toward the site. And, like I said before, I like the site and hope that it dose well, but I do feel that maybe a reshuffle is needed.

Ok, well I just want to clarify my original statement abit. I am not saying there is too much modding, all i'm saying is that every time an argument breaks out, it is modded or cutoff before I get a chance to read it :D
Also, I would like to say that the people who takee time out of their lives to run and contribute to this site have my thanks and appreciation, and I wasn't trying to downplay all you people do.
My whole point is just let people argue, and if there is offensive language or something like that, well just mod that and let the argument run its course. If Mason and RD could have finished their initial argument, then what happened 2day may not have happened at all.
This is all just an opinion I threw out and if I offended anyone by it, well tough :p

Gally says that there has been too much moderation going on here as of late. Well, mods moderate things for a lot of reasons, and my 2 main reasons are: 1, avoid having younger people seeing bad things like curse words and sexual content. Curse words and sexual content is ruining the youth of today. 2, prevent arguments from getting out of hand. If you're gonna fight and argue, good, but don't do it here. Do it somewhere else. We also don't want the younger folks to see disrespectful arguments either. I hope you guys understand what I'm saying here.

Clayboy, completely respect your opinion and it is good that people out there are still trying to be respectful, descent human beings. The problem is this isn't a town hall meeting. If you haven't noticed numbers are a dwindling. So when everyone quits posting here and your off playing the arcade by yourself and a couple kids are chatting on here what will the purpose of this site be?
I'm not trying to jump in the deep end here, it's just reading through this some people let their emotion get in the way of the truth. I don't think people are trying to directly attack the mods, they are just trying to point out this site could thrive with a little controversy such as this. Bad advertising is a lot better than no advertising.
I wasn't on for the whole mace, rd, reej thing but I know they are all strongly opionated people who help sites like this last. If anything you should give them each their own blog and let them spark up some fires.

Yes, I agree that modding could be better, but we're all human. We all make mistakes and we'll admit that.
You know, sometimes I ask myself if I should quit my role as a mod. I seem to mod too many things that tend to upset people. The problem is, I love this position as a mod. I like to call this my first job, except we(the mods) don't get paid. If we got paid, then we wouldn't have to leave the house(or the chair we sit on every time we visit this site). ;)

Thats find gypsy, but I'm pretty sure a 12 year old can figure out how to click on the 18 year old section. That was my point earlier in stating that porn is 1 click away. Lets not forget if they are on the internet they should either be monitored by their PARENTS :/ or they are going to find the bad stuff anyway.
If I ran this site I would simply block terrible language and things we can all agree on like nasty graphic sexual content. Other than that if you wanted to come on and tell everyone so and so really sucks at HSG or this person always gets lucky I wouldn't see a problem with that.
People seem to like to read the banter between RD and Mason so lets ring the bell and bring on round 2. 3? 4? Well, whatever round it is.

Folks, I just wanted to let you know that this subject is currently being discussed by the lead staff. I would love to say that a solution is on the table that would appeal to everyone, but unfortunately this is not an easy decision. Potentially making it harder is--and I could be wrong--that not many of you have put forth strong, well-reasoned arguments to allow profanity and explicit sexual discussion (let alone leaving personal wars to play out as they wish). It seems, rather, that some of you would prefer to make a joke out of all of this, or even paint the volunteers who mod these boards as overbearing police when they are simply trying to follow the current philosophy set forth by the site owner (who, by the way, pays out of his own pocket to keep this free forum running).
There's a difference between comments and substantive suggestions. If you want to leave this as more of a comment thread, so be it. Nothing wrong with leaving some comments about something you like or don't like about the site. However, if you are serious about wanting to allow more adult conversations, I would suggest to summarize the benefits of what you are arguing for and to provide some evidence or logical reasoning to support it. Then other people could add to it or simply agree (as opposed to saying, "Oh noes, they gonna mod me!").
It's up to you whether you want this to be taken seriously or not. I had intended to stay out of this discussion and see what organically grew out of it, but I decided to write this to let you know that you could be missing a golden opportunity here.

I seem to mod too many things that tend to upset people. The problem is, I love this position as a mod. I like to call this my first job, except we(the mods) don't get paid.). ;)
[QUOTE=Roughdawg4;71661] I understand that I probably shouldn't have modded those words, but I did that bcuz of Reeja and Goo_ooG and their disgraceful comments, and I probably shouldn't have done that, but I did, and I'm sorry.
This is a prime example of one person just editing or removing posts for the sake of it.
Obviously thinks he is important because he has been given a role of moderator. Misguided!
My comment certainly was not disgraceful. He obviously didn't like it and removed it.
And once again the point of not getting paid is brought up. And Op Prime brought this up also.
Money has nothing to do with the people who use this site.
If Morpheus doesn't want to use his own money, then just close the website. I don't believe people will be throwing themselves off a bridge as a result. The emphasis being made on this being a free site means nothing. If money means that much, add a joining fee and see how many stick around then. And before you reply with "well why are you here?" I am on this site because I enjoy reading some of the posts and the info for the game is very informative. But talk about living in a nanny state,I think you have just invented the first nanny site.
You guys are losing the point of what is actually being said here.
I don't think anyone wants this site to become full of sexual/abusive comments. That is not the issue.
What is being said is, when there are jumped up little people such as Clayboy removing posts and topics just because he can and for no good reason.

Very well Gally and OP.
May I suggest some sort of voting on the issue? Let our members speak their mind. and like Gally say, the issue is not that we wanted to post sexual joke every 5 minutes but we want to see fairness to all. Many decision had been made base on emotion rather than logic and it's hurt this community, worse, it had made side and isolation on this community.
Some people don't want to post simply because they don't want to offense anyone but if we all vote on issue ?
Fairness / adult playground

Impressive that this could grow after just a day, and an indicator of passionate opinion that can be stirred up by someone passing on a relatively minor quibble. As far as I can see, there is not over-moderation, but I don't inhabit every corner of the site. If a specific comment that someone has left, and feels strongly about, gets modded, they will be annoyed. It is from this that all of the argument/debate/thread has grown. So rather than continual modding, it is modding on ONE occasion, which is very different from the idea of surveillance police suggested. There has to be a point where a line is drawn. Some people may draw it sooner than maybe I would, but that will always be the way.
As a rather cynical aside, free speech is a myth. Thought is free, but speech most definitely isn't. There are some places where it's less regulated than others, but it is never free.

It's hardly surprising that anything 'deemed offensive to minors' is banned or frowned upon here. Are all, if not all a majority, of Mods and Admins from the U.S? The very same nation that has failed to find a distributor for a brilliant new movie called Creation because religious America is too uptight to allow freedom of thought.
Here's a link to the story - very sad (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/6173399/Charles-Darwin-film-too-controversial-for-religious-America.html)
Funny how us Atheists never seem to have any rights at all. Robin Hood is believable as Jesus Christ but if I started to preach about his virtues and ask people to follow him or form a religion based on his beliefs, I would be considered a wacko....
... as for the Moon landings.

Interesting point JB. There are three of us non-americans, although two live in the same house, Inter, myself and DC. And while I wouldn't want to get into a stream of Yank-bashing, this is the country that elected George W Bush TWICE, and thinks Ronald Reagan was the best president since Abraham Lincoln.
Mind you, they let outrageous violence pass as entertainment, yet when Janet Jackson has a "wardrobe malfunction", the TV station gets fined a shedload of cash. When that happened to Judy Finnegan we just laughed.

Or old enough to not really be fussed.
To be honest, the engaging topics don't get deleted for being engaging, its just the people involved tend to get a little carried away and start flaming each other about who has the bigger appendage, whos better at golf and such. The moment the engaging topic turns into a ego fight, is the moment the moderating team has to deal with it. I mean most of us are adults, just sometimes an argument boils down to something that could be mistaken for a couple of 12 year olds fighting.
to an extent, this site is slightly over moderated, but if wasn't for the moderating team, it would be a lot less friendly community.
The fact that traffic has gone down because of over moderating is totally mad. This currently iteration of the game is getting relatively old and since the site switch over, maby people didn't re-register there accounts. However, new members are joining every day, so its still a pretty popular site.
When the next game comes out, whether it bwe Everybody's Golf 6, or Open Tee 3, we WILL see another rise in traffic.
just my thoughts. (1600th post lawl)

I am a moderator myself for a different site ( family friendly ) and believe it or not there's a discussion brought up there recently about forming an 'over 18' section. I don't know if this is any help to you all but we have a help section with specific forum rules which apply to posting : http://www.funkysnooker.com/help/chat_room_rules
And just if your interested here's what's being said over there about the 'over 18' forum : http://www.funkysnooker.com/viewTopic.do?topicid=6052
I guess what it boils down to is do you want the site to be family friendly or not which is a choice for Morpheus to make.
I don't play HSG as much as i used to but i do still pop on here most days to have a look at the most recent topics and it's true that most of them these days don't really interest me which is why i don't post but that's just me ( not that i used to post much anyhow ), different people have different interests.
Needless to say i think the best way forward is to have a set of rules which everyone can see and abide by which makes moderating possible whether this be swearing allowed or not is up to the chief but something needs to be in writing which the moderators can turn to and it will make everyones life easier in my opinion.
Take care and i'll be reading :p

wiki--Sarcasm is a form of humor that uses sharp, cutting remarks or language intended to mock, wound, or subject to contempt or ridicule.
sarcasm is an art. if used properly, at least in the context of the hsg world, people ha-ha a little and move on. unfortunately, sarcasm doesn't do the job when pointed towards people who missed the joke altogether. artful sarcasm is clever but obvious. bad sarcasm just looks like an insult. it all depends on the audience.

Yeah, I'm sure a lot of people would fail that, especially those who lack maturity(and you know who you are, I'm not gonna say any names, so don't yell at me or anything like that).

Ooooh a... a kiddiethread!
I found plums ironic posts the most stress-releaving. And I would wish to remain the same as him (not taking sides).. Do filter out the swearing though. I find it rather obnoxious to use swearing as a means to intensify one's argument. The sophistic way would be more entertaining: rhetorics (as long as it's not used in an unethical manner like getting someone else to take out the trash instead..)

(This is funny because I struggle with it..)
Skibbityboodiddle. Got my new stereosystem in yesterday and I'm tweaking their positioning at the moooment.. I got a good discount and paid about a ps3-much less than what I initially thought and that only means one thing: Smuggles! Get your clubs out cuz

I read them and I am proud to say I think we have a more mature community, don't know how it is possible but thank god :)
Yeah, the posts in that thread are way worse than here, lol. But the forum rules were pretty good and Rage's suggestion about having visible modding/posting guidelines (like that other forum) is a darn good one.

Edit: Actually, on topic! I refuse to be modded cuz we're free to speak and everything.. :) ... Nah just kidding.

But what is a standard for sexual abusive or racist ? Mine got ban when it was a little sexual content while other not. Calling japanese players a " jap " is racist to some but not to other. I agree with everything you say so far but the problem is in the standard and quite honestly the " me me me authority "
Is calling a British person a 'Brit' classed as Racist? - I don't think so..
We all shorten our text for convenience, this is done globally.
btw - i am firmly against racism!

I thought I understood what he meant when I talked to him earlier but am I missing something?
And by the way you limey bastard, if you are going to use a name make sure you get it right. I grew up in Florida most of my life so you might be better off using Redneck then Yank you wanker ;)
