View Full Version : Closing Topics...

Just wondered why all the 'juicy' topics get closed?
I really enjoy reading them, right up to the point when they suddenly 'get closed' :(

Roughdawg4
02-01-2010, 06:16 AM
Yeah I was wondering the same thing too. Some of them aren't even that bad either, but they will probably close this one as well :)

I closed two topics last week. The members that initiated the posts were each making their own "personal announcement", which by itself is not a problem. However, taking into account their recent posting history of similar natures, i felt there was nothing productive that would come out of any future comments on either of the topics. Their annoucements were made and those members are free to govern themselves accordingly.

Roughdawg4
02-01-2010, 08:36 AM
I am not going to disagree with you there because I am sure we all knew where it was going.

But did you notice that people stop posting in topics and creating new ones when they see the big guy shutting something down. I really don't mind either way, just thought it was interesting :)

Ozvaldo

Yes i agree too Morph, and also agree with RD - They were kinda interesting :)

My "I'm not gonna post a lot anymore" topic was closed. Seriously, wtf?! I want it to be reopened, I really do.

Oh, and a side note, Frozen_Walkers, what the heck are you doing to me man? http://www.hotshotsgolf.com/community/private.php?do=showpm&pmid=29483 I hate Facebook, so forget it. Sorry, I had to let this out.

Ozvaldo
02-01-2010, 09:50 AM
Yes i was referring to your posts CB, but i do understand from a mods point of view too unfortunately.
As for FB most people 'do' like/use it, i think his thread was generic for any who was interested..

I doubt he'll call you that ;)

02-01-2010, 10:18 AM
And I think the mods closed that topic bcuz they don't want me to shut my mouth. I'm assuming that they think I'm the one who's really keeping this site active bcuz of my topics and comments.

I wouldn't know m8, it was just interesting reading to me..

ClayBoy31991
02-01-2010, 10:36 AM
And I was wanting to post something in there, but it looks like that won't happen. It goes something like this:

"After this post, I plan on not commenting on topics on this site for this month (February). It's like a resolution for the new year. It's also like taking a break from replying on topics. I really wanna prove all of you wrong. I wanna show you that I am mature."

Apparently, that's not gonna happen bcuz of all the recent events going on here with the closed topics and what not. I'll just have to keep doing my normal thing here and try to keep this site alive with my posts. So I guess it's so much for my "Not gonna post a whole lot anymore" topic.

Ozvaldo
02-01-2010, 11:05 AM
I understand where you're coming from, but be careful not to sound too 'ShadowClaw-esque'
From what i've read in other posts, people might start associating these kind of comments with his.
I'd say use the K.I.S.S theory in your posts for the time being m8..

Ozvaldo

Oh btw,
KISS stands for 'Keep it short & sweet' over here, rather than 'Keep it simple stupid' Which i don't think is as elegant.

dimskill
02-01-2010, 11:15 AM
Wise words Oz...

But Clay, you give yourself the resolution, then proceed to post 5 times about it, or related topics. Do you not see the irony? By those topics "not achieving much" means that they can only degenerate into flame wars which can be entertaining for those on the outside, but are often less so for those involved, as I'm sure you'd testify. Although I wouldn't necessarily have the cojones to close one down that early, it is perfectly justified (not that justification is strictly necessary) in order to nip the problem in the bud.

LOL you are flip-flopping in one post. I personally don't care what you do, but at least stick to what you say you will do. When you say something and then you change your mind later that day or the next day, it will rub people the wrong way.

Saying you are going to leave the site but still plug away just looks like a cry for attention and you are never going to get a good response from that.

And Frozen Walkers is a really good guy. You can have whatever opinion you want, but don't assume people will think that way because he would never do that. From the games we have played and conversations we had, he is nothing short of a classy guy :)

Technically, if you know how to argue constructively, and follow logical structure with enough solid premises to back your point, there's no reason you can't win every argument you encounter. (Just don't be cocky about it, because if you are, you may win the battle, but you just lost the war.)

When it gets down to matters of opinion, concede the argument, but recognize that no one really won that one, since opinions have no cases of validity.

Elektropop

Why can't an opinion be based on "solid premises"?

flare074
02-01-2010, 03:25 PM
Why can't an opinion be based on "solid premises"?

Pure opinion, like "The sky makes me happy," has no backing other than that individual's opinion. If the argument degenerates to that consistent of pure opinion, it doesn't matter what you pull factually to support your opinion, you can't counter their claim when it is solely based on opinion or feelings. You can say, "Oh, but all the sky is is... blah blah blah physics stuff..., and why should that make you happy?", but all it comes down to is feeling.

Those kinds of arguments are unwinnable no matter what side you argue.

Elektropop
02-01-2010, 03:45 PM
Oh that is true, no objection. Was just unsure about what you meant with 'opinion' or now 'pure opinion'. But that would be arguing what it actually means. In Finnish culture, I think, opinions are more pure, if they are based on accumulated banks of knowledge and facts. As in, if you were to argue about any international situation for instance, your opinion would weigh more if you had good arguments based on facts. Blah, I'm nitpicking, but I just maybe think that arguments are used to back up an opinion.

Hmmm. Wanna start a Wittgenstein-topic? :)

Although if I were a serious practitioner of Materialistic ontology, I could argue that feelings are based on something concrete, physics. This would be a tough stance though, but I think we're slowly getting there :)

But no, it doesn't come down to feeling, it comes down to ration, in any case.

Sorry about that, I should've been a bit more specific in my initial posting. I hold a definition of belief as fact-based, and opinion as that which is based solely on feelings or non-factual information. And arguments based upon opinions that are in themselves based upon analysis of facts presented are easily arguable, seeing as everything can be traced back to facts themselves. Then, you're arguing stance on the basis of comparison of fact, which is by no means controversial.

As for materialistic ontology, I'm not a huge fan of going as deep as that with regards to feelings on the basis of physics.

The original topic for this thread was a comment and suggestion regarding closing of topics, so I've moved it to a more appropriate board. Please feel free to continue the topic.

I have also posted a topic regarding rules and thread management to address issues that arose from Griffin's (bestcorner) thread mentioned above: http://www.hotshotsgolf.com/community/showthread.php?t=6971. You are welcome to post in that topic as well. If both threads continue and focus on closing of topics, we may merge them.
