My Ps3 was YLOD about 3 weeks ago but I did back up the entire system on EXT HDD. Last night I restore the old system to my new PS3 and these are things you may need to know.

1. restore old system from HDD to new system is easy but not all of the contents will transfer to your new PS3.
2. All DLC need to be re-download.
3. Not all accounts can be recovered [ mine missing one ]
4. I recover all of my hotshotsgolf stats but you do need to re-update files again even you back up the system [ just like when you logged on to on line for the first time ] once it's updated my on line stats and DLC show up. I did not lose anything.
5. You do not need to reformat your new Ps3 before restore the old system's files back.

If anyone have anything to add please feel free. So many people lose their files /YLOD and have to start over I hope this post can be helpful in some way.

Grr My English is so bad I misspell hotshotsgolf. it's a crime.

Peace

As FW said, there are some things that can't be recovered. Some game saves are locked in a way that prevent them from being backed up and restored (such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero). Also, if your PS3 is backward-compatible, the PS2 (and I think PS1) game saves will NOT be saved in regular backup/restore. I know because I lost all of them when I did a full backup before I got my PS3 repaired (and it was the same PS3 returned to me). At least I had many of them still on actual memory cards.

There is a new method of transferring data from one PS3 to a new one, but for just backing up your current PS3, people should be aware of the limitations.

What kind of ext HDD do you need to have to do this?
I got a portable for my PC, but it wont read on the PS3

The HDD needs to be formatted in FAT32. Not the usual NTFS. The thing with FAT32 is that there are 2GB file size limits (sometimes 4GB), and Windows will not typically format a FAT32 HDD into anything more than 2 or 4GB of space. (At least I think that's what Windows typically does; maybe Windows 7 is different.)

However, you can easily get other software to format a HDD to FAT32 well above 4GB. I used a regular ol Maxtor ext HDD and used an old version or PartitionMagic to create a large FAT32 partition to backup my PS3. Worked like a charm.

Depends on the HDD. If it's western digital you can go to their tech support and download the software for reformat to FAT32 it's took about 2 minute for me to reformat a 750 gig. Most company should have software tho. just look around and you should find it.
